Taking Stock After Typhoon HATO - Understanding Your Insurance

Published on: 24 August 2017 by Michael Lamb

Hong Kong is currently picking up the pieces left by Severe Typhoon HATO on August 23rd 2017. The T10 Signal storm hit the city around 6am Wednesday morning causing damage estimated to be in the region of HK$ 8 billion and leaving extensive damage in its wake.

With over 700 trees reported to have been knocked down, 480 flights delayed or canceled, widespread flooding, and roughly 5 people left dead in Macau following the storm, HATO was the worst Typhoon seen in the city since 2012 – the last time the T10 signal was raised.

The day after the storm residents and businesses are coming to understand how much damage they’ve been dealt by this awesome act of nature, and CCW Global is here to guide you through some basic insurance steps which will help you move past the worst of the aftermath as soon as possible.

Typhoon Caused Travel Delay – Travel Insurance Claims

With all the chaos HATO caused at the airport we have a feeling that many people will be reaching out to their insurance company today trying to make good on a travel insurance plan’s Delay of Trip or Trip Curtailment benefit.

Most Hong Kong Travel insurance plans will provide a number of coverage benefits which may be useful if you’ve been on the receiving end of a long-term flight delay or a cancellation because of the storm.

If Typhoon Hato caused you:

  • A delay for over 6 hours
  • To pay for extra accommodation
  • To re-route your flights
  • To miss a flight
  • Cancel your entire trip

Then you will likely be entitled to receive reimbursement from your travel insurance plan.

Making a Typhoon Hato Travel Insurance Claim

To make a claim under your travel insurance policy please contact your insurance company as soon as possible. If you are a CCW Global customer with a Hong Kong travel insurance policy please contact us at +852 2114 2840.

Generally you will need to provide the following information in order to ensure a smooth claims process:

  • Original Insurance policy / Certificate
  • Copy of ticket / itinerary showing entire trip
  • Completed claim form
  • Written confirmation from airline showing total length of delay or cancellation
  • Written confirmation from airline showing reason for delay
  • Any other invoices or payments which will be forfeited due to cancellation / delay.

Typhoon Caused Home Damage – Home Insurance Claims

With all the flying objects caused by Typhoon HATO, and the rain and storm tide that Hong Kong experienced, there will be more than 1 apartment and/or business dealing with storm damage today – broken windows, flooding, and structural damage will be require fixing.

Most Fire Insurance policies will offer the requisite cover for dealing with any unfortunate effects of the Typhoon, and if you are holding a Fire and Allied Perils Insurance plan in Hong Kong then making a claim will be fairly straightforward.

For individuals with a simple Home Contents policy who are renting their property, there may be a much bigger grey area involved in any claim and you will likely have to go through your landlord for the big ticket items (such as flood damage to the structure of an apartment), but it is worth checking with your insurer (or Broker) as soon as possible.

Post Typhoon Home Insurance Claims

To make a claim under your Home insurance policy please contact your insurance company as soon as possible. If you are a CCW Global customer with a Hong Kong Home insurance policy please contact us at +852 2114 2840.

  • Completed Claims form
  • Documentation of Damage caused by Typhoon Hato to your property
  • Documentation of any personal items damaged or lost due to the storm

Additional information can be found by clicking Hong Kong Home Insurance Claims.

Typhoon Damaged Vehicles – Car Insurance Claims

When it comes to any damage the storm may have done to your vehicle (like completely submerging it, or blowing metal through the windscreen), only cars which have Comprehensive insurance will be covered.

If you have a Third Party Only Insurance plan for your car, and have experienced any storm damage on the vehicle you will need to pay for the cost of any repairs out-of-pocket. Car owners with Comprehensive Car Insurance plans should contact their broker or insurer as soon as possible if they have experienced any damage.

Making a Typhoon Related Car Insurance Claim
