Winter Travel Insurance in Hong Kong

The end of the year is peak travel season in Hong Kong. As people return home to see family, or jet off across Asia for beach vacations, or even head to Europe and America to go skiing, from now until Chinese New Year residents of the city will be heading to the airport and boarding planes.

Whether you are taking the train to China, hopping on the ferry to Macau, or have purchased a ticket for more foreign climates, travel insurance can help to ensure that your winter vacation goes off without a hitch.

Single Trip Travel Insurance

Single Trip and Annual Options

If you are considering purchasing a travel insurance plan for your holidays this winter, the first place to start is by determining whether a single trip travel insurance plan, or an annual travel insurance plan, would be more suitable to your needs.

If this trip is the only one you are going to be taking for the rest of the year, or if you are planning one other summer vacation, then a single journey travel insurance policy may be the plan that is right for you. Single trip plans start on the day that you depart on your journey, and end on the day you land back in Hong Kong. Single trip travel insurance plans are priced for the length of your journey – longer trips will always be more expensive to ensure than shorter ones under this type of plan.

However, if you are planning a lot of overseas travel over the next 12 months, then the cost associated with insuring each one of those trips on an individual basis can quickly become very expensive. An alternative to Single Trip Travel Insurance is Annual Travel Insurance.

Under Annual Travel Insurance plans, you will be covered by the policy for as many trips as you may take overseas during the policy year. There are some restrictions, one of which is that no single trip you take on the plan can be longer than 30 days in duration. But in general, Annual Travel Insurance plans are a great option for individuals who can expect to take many overseas trips and do not want to deal with the headache of taking out new insurance every time they go overseas. Annual travel insurance products are normally more expensive than a single trip plan, but will be cheaper than multiple single trip purchases in a single year.

Hong Kong Travel Insurance Coverage

In terms of the protection afforded to you under a travel insurance policy in Hong Kong, you have many options. There are a tremendous number of travel insurance products available in HKSAR, and the sheer variety means that no every policy is going to offer the same types of coverage.

However, some commonly encountered Travel Insurance Benefits that are available on many plans include:

Trip Delay and Cancellation Insurance

One of the most frustrating parts about international travel is missing a connecting flight. From weather, to labour interruptions, there is a lot that can go wrong at the airport. Having a flight canceled or delayed can impact you plans – and cause you to forfeit prepaid deposits or booking expenses depending on the length of the delay or the extent of the cancelation.

Travel insurance can compensate you against the costs of missing your hotel booking, or having to get new accommodation, any event deposits you may have missed, as well as meal expenses if your flight has been delayed or overbooked.

Further to this, if you are forced to cut short your trip and return to Hong Kong, travel insurance can offer assistance with rebooking fees or additional airfare expenses.

Baggage and Personal Effects Insurance

Losing your possessions while on holiday can be a literal nightmare. From having to deal with inflated resort pricing when obtaining replacement clothes, to dealing with the airlines as you try to find out what has happened to your luggage, the stress of managing a situation where your things have not arrived in the same place as you can put you off the entire vacation.

Travel Insurance can’t prevent an accident or situation that leads to your belongings getting lost, damaged, or stolen, but it can provide the financial assistance you need to obtain replacements and continue having the vacation that you deserve. From money, credit cards, and travelers’ cheques, through to laptops, phones, and your clothes, Travel Insurance products ensure that even if you should encounter a situation where you are deprived of your possessions, that you will not break the bank replacing them.

Travel Medical Insurance

Travel Medical Insurance

Many Hong Kong travel insurance products will have a health insurance component. However, it is important to understand that in many cases this is an emergency benefit designed to maintain you while you are repatriated to Hong Kong for continuing care. The medical insurance benefits on Hong Kong travel insurance products are not designed for long term healthcare treatment whilst you are overseas – should you experience an accident or injury these products will “patch you up and get you home” and provide coverage that is commensurate with that objective.

There are, however, non-conventional health insurance products that have been designed specifically to address the healthcare needs of long-term travelers. If you are going to be away from Hong Kong for more than 3 months and are concerned about ensuring you have access to quality medical care in a worst-case scenario, then it is worthwhile considering a Digital Nomad Health Insurance product.

This type of coverage will be more expensive than traditional travel insurance protection, but does ensure that you are able to receive medical treatment at your current overseas location for an extended period of time, without having to worry about an evacuation to your country of residence.
