With the global average cost of a single IVF treatment cycle coming in at between US$10,000 to US$15,000, the costs associated with trying to conceive a child through assisted reproduction are almost as high as the costs of delivering the baby!

Generally, if a Hong Kong medical insurance policy includes IVF and Fertility Insurance coverage the plan will cover the following treatments:
- Prescribed drug Treatment and Laboratory Work
- Intracytoplasmatic sperm injection (ICSI)
- IVF and ICSI may only be applied alternatively
- Zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT)
- Gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT)
- Invitro fertilization (IVF)
- Artificial insemination (AI)

Insurance Limits
IVF and Fertility coverage will normally fall under a plan’s Maternity Insurance Benefit and will usually be accompanied by a sub-limit specific to treatment the policyholder receives in relation to IVF and Fertility. However, it is important to note that, in some cases, the IVF and Fertility Insurance benefit may be provided through the outpatient portion of a health insurance policy; you should ensure that you are fully aware of how this benefit operates prior to purchasing a plan.
The limits on IVF and Fertility coverage will usually range from US$2,600 to US$17,000 and will normally be for the entire lifetime of the policy. This means that once the limit has been reached no more fertility or IVF treatment can be claimed for under the policy.
IVF and Fertility Insurance Waiting Periods
In many cases the IVF and Fertility Coverage benefit of a Hong Kong Health Insurance plan will be attached to a waiting period.
The waiting periods associated with this policy benefit will normally range from 18 months to 24 months in duration. As such, it is important that you have held your Hong Kong health insurance plan for at least that length of time before seeking IVF or Fertility treatment if you would like the costs covered under your policy.
