Overview

Chronic Condition Insurance

One of the biggest draw backs to living in Hong Kong is the permanent haze hanging over the city. The pollution is an ever present fact of life, one which many people have learned to ignore and live with. However, the smog and haze perpetually fogging the view pose a number of serious health hazards including conditions like Asthma and Eczema.

Conditions like Asthma and Eczema are considered to be Chronic Conditions; that is to say that Asthma and Eczema, like Diabetes, Arthritis, Glaucoma and Epilepsy, are medical conditions which currently have no known cure. Treatment is available to alleviate the symptoms of these conditions, but curing them outright is currently not within the ability of medical science.

Because no cure exists for chronic medical conditions any individual suffering from one of these illnesses will require long-term treatment of the condition. In the case of Asthma this would be the use of an inhaler when an Asthma attack occurs.

Obtaining continual medication, possibly for the rest of your life, can be extremely expensive. A Hong Kong health insurance plan which includes Chronic Condition coverage can help to alleviate the costs of treating the condition and ensure that you have comprehensive protection should the condition deteriorate.

Coverage for Acute Phases of the Condition

While Chronic Conditions have no known cure, they may display symptoms or experience a flare-up. An example of this can be seen in a condition like Asthma.

Asthma cannot currently be cured, but asthmatics may experience attacks which require medication to stop. The Asthma attack, in this situation, would be an example of the “acute” phase of the condition.

A Hong Kong health insurance plan which includes Chronic Condition coverage for Acute Phases only will normally provide protection for the medication needed to alleviate the symptoms associated with an Asthma attack.

Annual Coverage Limits for the Condition

A second way in which a Hong Kong health insurance plan may provide coverage for a chronic condition is by setting acoverage limit(hk.ccw-global.com/limits/) on the amount of protection offered in relation to the treatment of the condition each year.

An annual coverage limit would enable you to obtain medication and treatment up to a pre-determined financial limit each year that you hold the policy. For example, if you suffered from Diabetes then the Annual limit would allow you to purchase a certain amount of medication, or receive a number of consultations in relation to the condition for each year that you hold the plan.

An annual limit will reset each year that you renew your Hong Kong medical insurance policy.

Lifetime Chronic Condition Coverage Limit

Like an Annual coverage limit, a lifetime limit will provide a pre-determined level of protection for chronic medical conditions. However, instead of renewing each policy year the lifetime limit is fixed over the entire life of the Hong Kong health insurance plan.

While a lifetime limit for Chronic Condition coverage will generally be very high it is important to note that once the limit has been reached no further coverage for the condition will be offered by the plan.
